HARRISBURG – Carl and the Not-So-Lazy Kates of Montour County, along with their not-so-average Shetland sheep, Bear, whipped up the winning shawl in the 24th Annual Sheep-to-Shawl Contest at the 2007 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

“It all starts with the sheep,” said Libby Beiler, Bear’s owner and the weaver of the team. “Bear’s fleece is perfect for spinning and weaving and now he’s on the Farm Show shearing schedule so he won’t be sheared again until this time next year.”

In the sheep-to-shawl contest, teams of five shear the sheep, spin the wool and then weave a finished garment in less than three hours. The shawls are evaluated by a panel of four judges and scored on shearing, fleece, spinning, weaving, design and speed. Each shawl has to be 22 inches wide and 78 inches long and is designed based on a theme chosen by the team.

This was the fifth year Carl and the Not-So-Lazy Kates participated in the contest, and their teamwork paid off as they finished first in less than two hours. The team started using Bear’s fleece three years ago, giving them an extra edge in the competition.

The team won the contest two years ago, came in second last year, and this year, Bear won the Fleece Award. Their shawl also topped the auction at $875, purchased by Meghann and Shawn Connor of Harrisburg.

“This is such a thrill,” said Spinner Fiona Powell. “We do it for the love of it and we’ll start thinking about next year’s shawl on the way home today!”

Rounding out the winning team was shearer Carl Geissinger, spinners Francie Appleman and Ruth Ruch, and carder Katie Watson.

Several other awards were given:Champion Shearer – Nathan Good, Yorktowne Spinners, York Co.Team’s Choice Award – Loyalhannon Spinners, Westmoreland Co.Weaver’s Award – JaAnn Smith, Loose Threads, Lebanon-Dauphin cos. Spinner’s Award – Red Rose Threadling Toes, Lancaster Co.

“There are more than 20 sheep-to-shawl competitions across the United States,” said one of the contest organizers, Elaine Harvey. “Ours here at the Farm Show is considered one of the most technically difficult because we actually start with the sheep shearing.”

There were eight teams in the contest. 1st – Carl and the Not-So-Lazy Kates, Montour Co. 2nd – Yorktowne Spinners, York Co. 3rd – Red Rose Treadling Toes, Lancaster Co. 4th – Lovely Lambs & Ornery Rams, Lebanon Co. 5th – Treadlers Thru Time, Lebanon Co. 6th – Loyalhannon Spinners, Westmoreland Co. 7h – Loose Threads, Lebanon-Dauphin cos. 8th – The Fast & the Fibrous, York Co.
